Our Story

Stranraer Water Sports Association (SWSA) was set up in January 2016 by members of local water sports clubs. They wanted to promote water sports within the Loch Ryan area, and to encourage more local people to get involved.

We are a registered charity with SCIO status, governed by a board of Trustees who volunteer their time and expertise to help guide the organisation forward.

We may be a young organisation but we have big ambitions! We are passionate about making water sports accessible and affordable for everyone, and our Association is here to support people through their water sports journey.

Our aims are:

  • To develop a membership that embraces both water related and social activities, open to both its members and visitors, supporting the development of Stranraer as a leisure destination.
  • To create an association that embraces all ages and social groups, taking positive steps to encourage participation by disabled people and those from disadvantaged social backgrounds.
  • To provide facilities to approved groups for sailing, racing and other water borne activities.
  • To promote and encourage training linked to good practices in the launching, sailing and recovery of watercraft.
  • To organise racing under the rules of the WS, RYA, SRA, ICF, IWA, SCRA and class rules, as may be applicable and appropriate.
  • To provide social and other facilities for the benefit of members of the SWSA.
  • To liaise and foster cooperation with all other organisations who have a shared interest in the water and its opportunities.
