‘The Long Ryan’ event, a circumnavigation of Loch Ryan took place on Saturday 27th April in un-forecasted challenging conditions, with Troon emerging as the winners of the coastal rowing and sailing race.
Crews from Stranraer, Wigtown, Annan and Troon took part in the event, which began with a dramatic Le Mans-style start that saw crew members racing across the beach to their boats before setting off on the course. Due to deteriorating visibility, the route was modified from the planned full journey around the coastline of the Loch. Crews rowed the 4.1 miles to Wig Bay, collected their tokens, and then returned to Stranraer.
Kevin Packer (Pax), Trustee of Stranraer Water Sports Association and organiser of the event, said:
"The Long Ryan turned out to be more challenging than expected due to deteriorating visibility and breezy, wavy conditions that weren't in the forecast. Without clear landmarks visible on land, crews faced the additional challenge of navigation, making this a true test of their all-round rowing skills.
"As a safety-conscious organisation, we adjusted the route accordingly, and I'm pleased to say that despite the challenging conditions, everyone enjoyed the event. The Troon crew demonstrated exceptional skill to take the win. We're already looking forward to next year's race, hopefully with better weather on our side."
The Long Ryan is the first in a series of water sports events taking place in Stranraer this year, with SkiffieWorlds set for July and the Fin & Foil Championships in August.
