Senior Watersports Instructor

Summary of role

To support and develop the watersport activities in a safe, professional and inclusive manner. To work alongside the chief instructor in the development of the activities, the waterpsorts community, young instructors and events run at Stranraer Water Sports Association.

Contract Length
Seasonal Job – April to September. Opportunity to extend.
Contract Remuneration
£22,500 - £24,500 DOE
Reports to
Chief Instructor
Key responsibilities and tasks
  1. Ensure an excellent standard of customer services and attitude at all times
  2. Create a safe, informative and inclusive environment for all staff, volunteers and clients to operate in.
  3. Prepare, organise and deliver a range of water and beach-based activities, as outlined in the governing body guidelines and the Stranraer Water Sports Operating procedures.
  4. Ensure the highest standard of safety at all times.
  5. Ensure that all equipment is maintained effectively and in a timely manner by liaising with the Chief Instructor, Staff, and Volunteers.
  6. Deliver briefings and debriefings to the team as required.
  7. Actively pursue personal development, and ensure that your knowledge of current governing body syllabi is excellent.
  8. Working with Staff and Board Representatives to develop and deliver staff training, in particular to the current & new cohort of Young Instructors and volunteers
  9. Willingness to support engagement activities within schools, community organisations as required, promoting all activities and events held at SWSA
  10. To support board members, sub committees, volunteers and third parties in the delivery of events. 
Personal requirements
Essential Qualifications and Experiences
  • RYA Dinghy Instructor.
  • BCU Paddle sport Instructor with SUP Endorsement
  • Up to date First Aid certified, meeting the requirements for SGB qualifications.
  • Experience in delivering initiatives and programmes to reach organisational outcomes.
  • Experience in working as a lead instructor, running, and facilitating safe, fun and engaging activity
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
  • RYA Senior Dinghy Instructor
  • RYA Power Boat Instructor.
  • RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor.
  • Wing – experience in wing sailing / instructor
  • RYA Level 2 Rach Coach
  • BC Sea Kayak Coach qualification or equivalent.
  • BSUPA Level 2 Coach Qualification or equivalent Paddle UK certificate.
  • RYA Shore based Qualifications (RYA First Aid Instructor, SRC etc)
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Able to deliver engaging and safe activity sessions to children and adults.
  • Knowledge of all relevant governing body schemes.
  • Able to work in a team and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, community representatives and clients in high pressure situations, and resolve issues or complaints.
Personal Qualities
  • Presentable and punctual at all times.
  • Approachable, welcoming, friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Flexible approach to work in a rapidly changing industry.
  • Experience of delivering land based associated activities.
